CAEDMON / WORK #123

Auditorio di piume

Her distraction had been entered as a kind of absence. We had allowed the bird its entire stillness, though no one could say how much of it was occupied by the voice. Familiarity made us stricter. Where we could recognize a thought turned elsewhere, we began to subtract.

This altered the proportions of the company. The unreadable could receive without limit; someone close enough to be understood grew smaller through the visibility of another concern. We had made no allowance for the space her distraction required.

The voice continued past her. To those farther away, it came from where she sat, and some of its pauses would have been indistinguishable from hers.
