Her presence left all the distances intact. The measures by which we found our way remained exact, though they gave no account of her nearness. We had placed her among the limits of the place. This allowed us to proceed as though whatever gave us an inside must itself remain outside.
The water received her at her own scale. A slight disturbance passed through her and through the smaller things beside her; nothing had first been made to fit. Even the part of her that continued into the enclosing edge was exposed. We had allowed for a boundary to be crossed, or broken. Its participation required a different allowance, including along those portions where there was no passage.
