The hem was left out of the first reckoning. Whatever followed a body was assigned to that body, as though movement settled the question of belonging. But some of what moved had previously served to keep the others in their places. Its pattern had scarcely altered.
An enclosure can travel for a while in this manner. Those beside it make room; their separate gestures accommodate a movement whose full extent the moving person cannot feel. The distance between them is being carried by someone. We have no adequate measure for this distance, since gathering the cloth would change it without bringing anyone nearer.
The fixed portions were counted separately. They bore the same ornament, and were still expected to support their share.
