Il bastone tra le punte

The length above the hand had been entered separately. Below it, the same material received another name. Yet the staff had undergone no alteration where it was held. The division belonged to the contact; it could travel without displacing either end.

A greater difficulty arose when we tried to locate the bearer by the same means. Her face was turned elsewhere. The attachment continued, with no sign of requiring the rest of her. We had allowed for things to extend beyond the places where they became necessary to us. Concerning a person, our reckoning was less exact: whatever did not enter into the relation had been counted as absent. Some of the distances would have to be measured again, with her head still turned.
