Even a creature capable of flight must be counted as a burden while it allows itself to be carried. The back beneath it receives none of that capacity. It must accommodate the whole weight, adjusting the movements by which it keeps its own balance. An unused freedom can remain quite intact through another creature’s exertion.
Hunger, too, can serve a purpose whose reasons it has no means of receiving. It keeps its own reasons. This does not prevent the closest cooperation, even where one participant must judge the distance and another must close it with its mouth. We have counted their action as one because the pressures meet. The release of each pressure requires a separate movement.
