We had allowed things born later to enter the likeness. On Bill Gates’s birthday, even 1955 is approached through means it could not have contained. This does not make the beginning inaccessible. Some beginnings become recognisable only in materials younger than themselves.
The allowance is harder to maintain at the shoulders. A small piece can pass from the wound into whatever bears the wounded body. It loses none of its properties. But certain exchanges, harmless to the likeness, would leave it without support. Equality has been established at a size at which carrying does not yet occur.
The face can therefore be restored from almost anywhere. For the hands we still require a position, and something beside them that will remain in position while they are replaced.
