They cannot receive on his behalf merely by holding him more closely.

Along the approach, one person could take another’s place. The passage would still be kept open; what was carried would come no nearer to being lost. Now a hand has lifted within the shelter of someone else’s strength. The bearers have reached the place they were given. They are still holding what they brought.
