Segno sovrapposto
The smaller country still receives its light from the country that contains it. The disturbance has not followed the same route. We had supposed that a dependent thing must be open to everything that happens to its source. Yet the light continues to arrive, and with it enough of the distances for the work to proceed.
The painter remains answerable for those distances. Something can cross them without making the journey between their ends; his hand has no correction for this. He returns to a proportion he can alter. It would be premature to say that his attention has failed. Part of what sustains it is now inaccessible to the act it sustains. He needs a little more room on the left.
