Spiga condivisa
CAEDMON / WORK #315

Spiga condivisa

The shorter distance remained after the descent. Wings could not cross it: what lay within reach still had to be taken up. Beside the one who had arrived, another was already bending. Neither could spare the other this last part of the way.

The hand that had gathered something was less available for gathering. It had acquired another task, easily mistaken for rest. To open it would undo a little of what had been accomplished; to keep it closed meant continuing with less than the whole of one’s strength.

This must be allowed for when considering what a second presence adds. Some of its strength is soon occupied in the same way.
