It was the resemblance that led us to expect the waking to spread. The closed eyes were already being treated as an earlier condition of the open one. This gave their stillness a direction it did not have.
A condition may remain local even where the substance offers no boundary. What receives a body’s weight can extend into what faces the body. In that further extent it has other capacities; the burden need not accompany it everywhere. We have allowed too much to follow from the absence of a break.
The adjoining parts have not fallen behind. Their rest belongs in the account of what supports the waking part, though nothing has yet required them to wake.
