Even here, the idle feet belong in the account. The demand they answer has been taken up elsewhere; their capacity remains with the sleeper. We would miscalculate if we counted two standings, or supposed that only one body was capable of standing.
Support allows the bodies to remain in different conditions. Wakefulness need not spread through everything it sustains. The sleeper can lie within the reach of another creature’s attention without becoming attentive herself, and without making that attention her own.
Her hands rest near the bearer’s opposite ends. She could scarcely reach farther, yet the extent of her contact gives her no measure of what she can direct. The touches add a little to the burden. This weight, too, is carried while she sleeps.
