The rooster could once have been crushed by the weight it now bears. Its enlargement has altered this relation without requiring another kind of life. We had included its smallness in our definition of it. Some of our certainty came from being able to hold it.
Much of a living support remains unoccupied by what rests upon it. This remainder is easily omitted from the account, especially when the burden is human. The account then gives us something admirably fitted to its purpose, whose ability to carry the weight has never been established. That ability belonged to the whole creature.
The supported body also retains what it no longer uses. The feet can hang above the surface without losing their sensitivity. A slight movement reaches them through the body beneath.
