The shelter must be included in the encounter, although it is below the faces and appears to take no part. It allows a person to be present by a small portion of himself. What he has kept out of reach accompanies everything he sees.
The exposed person has no corresponding remainder. Even the parts of him that have no business in the encounter must attend it. Measuring the distance between the two faces will give a correct result. The inequality enters elsewhere, in how much of each person has had to arrive.
