The divisions are needed where the surface bends. They continue into what supports it, though there they have a different task. A body resting across both receives its weight back without having to distinguish between them. Its ease is quite exact.
The blade cannot borrow these lines. They already pass through the covering and into the support without releasing anything. To follow them would be to repeat an arrangement in which separation has become useful to what remains together.
We have not yet accounted for the length of the edge itself, which must remain unbroken. The force is received at some distance from the place where it will act. That distance belongs in the account, along with the small divisions that allow the resting surface to yield beneath an elbow.
