The same white may serve what can no longer rise and what has ceased to need support. No impurity in the colour accounts for the difference. It has to be carried by the relations around it, some of which extend beyond the surface.
This is why an omission must be examined at some distance from the place where we expected a likeness. What was left out may have entered as a condition of the work: the light available, the interval during which a hand remains steady. It need never become a figure.
A little of that white is mixed into the surrounding ground. There it serves without distinction, and the hand continues to use it.
