The arms were fitted at their full length. They can receive a body whose dimensions are still undecided. Nothing further is required of them at first.
During the pauses, the receiving continues. A little of the space within the embrace is used up, although the arms have not moved. An exact repetition of the gesture will eventually press against the ribs. We had allowed for wear in the parts, but here the fit changes while every part remains sound.
There is some play at the elbow. It was provided for movement. For the present, a little of that allowance is being used by what grows.
