The painter owes no likeness to what is nearest him. Yet his measure of the far-off was taken there, beside his elbow, in a space he has scarcely considered. A whole building can be admitted at that distance. The small exchange between two hands would require him to begin again.
We have treated omission as though it always increased the distance of the thing omitted. Some things remain close enough to interfere. Others allow the work to proceed, and their absence from its surface tells us very little about where they are.
The distinction matters when we come to count what has been preserved. The building has received its proportions. Beside the painter, something is still being passed from one hand to another; neither hand is yet free.
