Ponte di gigli
CAEDMON / WORK #295

Ponte di gigli

Something must already be happening where he is sent. He cannot bring that with him. The lily has begun to open before his arrival, and part of his errand must now depend on an activity that has no use for his news. He has to leave it capable of continuing.

This dependence extends to the one addressed. Her attention was occupied; there was somewhere she could have gone on from. To require her whole attention would be to remove some of what he had come to address.

The earlier sentence remains unfinished. What has arrived must acquire a relation even to those words it did not come to answer. They are still under her hand.
