CAEDMON / WORK #329

Giglio in asse

The answer made room for something that could not yet be held. We have counted the hands that came later as though they were already contained in that answer. Each had to find its place. The weight could be shared, though no one could carry a portion of it away: what rested on any one of them extended beyond the reach of all the others.

The first receiving was still taking place. This has caused some confusion in the accounts, which put the answer first and the weight afterwards. They leave no interval in which both require room. A stem rises through that interval. It cannot assist with the lowering, and moving it would scarcely help. The hands have to arrange themselves a little farther apart.
