Manto di riflessi

Nor would taking the covering away settle the matter. Some of the leaves would fall; others would depart with what they lay upon. They had been equally light. Nothing in their redness had disclosed which kind of separation we were preparing.

The distinction concerned what could be returned. Whatever merely rested upon us could be set down elsewhere. What had entered the weave would take a little of its place with it, and leave us to supply that place again. We had made no allowance for this in our account of departure. Near the hem, the same shapes continued beneath the feet, where there was no covering to lift.
