The measurement had stopped where she could be wounded. Beyond that, the cloth spread beneath the feet of those approaching her. They reckoned their distance from her body, although something of hers already bore their weight.
Their purposes remained distinct. One could gather a fold in a hand; another could advance across it without noticing a change of ground. Neither had to acknowledge the whole extent of what they touched. This was possible even for someone coming to do her harm.
We had counted distance only where nothing of either body intervened. Here it was necessary to allow for a distance made of something still worn by the one approached. Some of it had been drawn aside to make room for a knee.
