In the earlier reckoning, completion began where possibility had been spent. Much was left waiting under that rule. A surface might have acquired its full extent, even its own movements, and still be counted among the preparations for something elsewhere. Whatever remained upon it was referred to that future. Its present condition scarcely entered the account.
The colours need not be mixed. Their separation permits a choice, though it may also belong to an arrangement that has already gone about its own affairs. The intervals between them change with the bending of a knee. That movement must be allowed for in the reckoning.
