We had credited the hand with all the steadiness of what it held aloft. Yet the shaft rested against something that could still turn. Each effort to escape travelled a little way upward and entered the bearing of the whole, where it was scarcely distinguishable from the firmness opposing it.
Resistance cannot be assigned entirely to the body that resists. Some portion has already passed into an arrangement from which that body is excluded. It helps maintain the height under which it suffers. We have allowed for the weight carried by the hand; the corrections demanded of it require a different reckoning. They continue after the grip appears settled.
