Ritratto duplicato
His repose had been prepared in bodies other than his own. He could put aside the last covering because so much readiness remained around him. Even those who slept were capable of being recalled by a sound. Their sleep had a task waiting inside it.
The hounds lay against what had been spread for him. They had found the part of his distinction that could be used without being understood: its warmth, the room it took from the ground. Nothing in the arrangement required them to honour its purpose. Yet removing them would have changed the ease with which he occupied it.
Only he was required to keep still. The others could shift their weight, turn towards a noise. If he grew tired of resting, someone would have to notice.
