We have allowed the listener to remain outside the effort of calling. Her position makes that separation difficult. Beneath her, the voice is still an occupation of the body, and she must leave room for it while continuing to be carried. A loose hand is sufficient. Nothing in this adjustment tells us whether she has understood the call.
