The fork can be laid down between mouthfuls. A creature whose instrument grows from its face carries it through the hours when there is nothing to eat. In considering how a body reaches beyond itself, we have given too little attention to what it can put aside.
World Pasta Day names a common occasion; each mouth still has to gather the length in its own way. Some of it has already entered the eater while the rest hangs in the cold, within reach of another appetite. It would be premature to count the whole strand as consumed. Yet the portion outside is being drawn by what has happened to the other end. The next turn of the wrist must allow for this.
