The joins had been left out of the account. Taken separately, the pieces gave no reason why one expanse could be worn and another had to be entered. Even their divisions were alike. A little freedom along an edge was enough to alter what counted as a way through.
The fan could close without any part of it departing. We had counted the spaces between its parts among the permanent things, and had already begun to reckon journeys across them. Farther from the joint there was room for these calculations. Nearer in, the same boundaries continued side by side, too close to admit a traveller. The measurements taken there would have to be kept separately.
